France has some of the biggest linked resorts with extraordinary ranges of terrain from long distance cruising to huge vertical drops. Big, modern lift networks mean queuing is rare. The purpose built resorts may lack the charm of the traditional style but the convenience makes up for that.

Purpose built Isola 2000 is high in the southern alps close to the Italian border and boasts a good snow record. Mountain access is easy and the runs in the Domaine Blanc area are best suited to intermediates. Expect evenings to be fairly quiet here with apartments dominating.

La Clusaz is a traditional village with a distinctive French feel. The good sized mountain area is well connected and offers above and below tree line skiing. There is a variety of runs to suit most tastes. The lower altitude slopes are covered by extensive snowmaking.
